Who can check out items from Lane Library?
Current Photo ID required. Most students are automatically uploaded into the library system (we are hoping that staff and faculty will also be loaded automatically soon). Students who are not in the library system need to provide a copy of current schedule of classes, and then be manually entered into the system. Students can print their schedule using any of the public computers. All other patron types must be added to the system manually.

What is a database?
The Library subscribes, or pays money, for access to a variety of online databases. These databases include journal, magazine, newspaper articles, and more that are not freely available on the web. Many of the databases are full-text, meaning that you can access the full article directly off your screen which allows you to work from home if you like. Each subscription database may work a little differently from another. You should always refer a patron to a librarian for help with searching a database.
- Full-text databases which give access to the entire text of articles and documents, for example electronic dictionaries and encyclopedias, but also journals, conferences, market research reports, directories, laws, etc.
- Indexes and abstracts, used to index articles in journals, magazines and newspapers, books, conferences proceedings, etc. Some include an abstract which will include a summary of the cited article. These are not full-text. Full-text may be somewhere else in the library, or can be ordered through interlibrary loan.
- Combinations of the above, for example an index including both citations to articles and their complete text. Example: EBSCO's Academic Search Premier.
Databases are listed on the Find an Article webpage >>
Who can use the databases?
Anybody can use the databases from in the Library.
Students, faculty, staff, community borrowers, and townpatrons can access the databases off-campus by entering their last name and L number (a password is not required). The proxy server controls access to the databases. Each database is entered in a forward table. You can tell which databases use the proxy server by the url which starts with http://0-databaseURL.library.lanecc.edu
What to do if someone can't connect off campus:
- Check to make sure they are in the library system - not all students, faculty, and staff are automatically uploaded from Banner
- Check how their last name is spelled in the system. Mc George is different than McGeorge
- The proxy server may have to be restarted - see Linda Grenz or Raymond Bailey
- If patron still can not connect to the database, provide patron with the list of database username and passwords

Users may have additional difficulty accessing ARTstor both on and off campus. Read Using ARTstor webpage >>
What is Summit?
Summit is the online library catalog for the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a library consortium composed of over 30 public and private colleges, community colleges, and universities in the Pacific Northwest. Through Summit many of our patrons have access to over 27 million books, sound recordings, videos, and more. Items can be delivered to Lane's circulation desk, or they can also be delivered to any of the other Alliance member libraries. Summit items will usually arrive within 2-5 days from the time they are requested. Patrons of other member libraries can borrow materials by visiting Lane, and our qualified patrons can visit other libraries (get more information about visiting patrons).
Summit Borrowing is available to Lane's currently enrolled credit students and current or retired faculty and staff members. Although Summit borrowing is not available to non-credit students, community borrowers or town patrons, our interlibrary loan service is available to these library users. Please check with the circulation desk at 463-5273 for more information on interlibrary loans.

What is an ILL?
Interlibrary loan enables Lane students, faculty, and staff to obtain materials that are not available in the Lane Library. The lending library determines whether a particular item can be provided, what the cost will be, the length of time it is on loan, and the time it takes to process the request. Regional agreements regulating interlibrary loan and federal copyright law also place limitations on the types of materials that may be borrowed, as well as the number of articles that can be requested from a particular journal. Current books, materials in high demand, audiovisual materials, or rare books may be difficult or impossible to obtain. Materials usually arrive within seven to ten days, but they may take as long as four weeks to arrive.
Note: Interlibrary loan requests will be filled through Summit for eligible borrowers. Summit borrowing is available to credit students, staff and faculty - read more about Summit borrowing. If the borrower is not eligible for Summit privileges, or if the item is not available from Summit, the request will be filled through the interlibrary loan process. Please check the Lane catalog and the Summit catalog prior to making a request. If the material is checked out of Lane's Library, you may place a hold on the item by using Lane's "Hold This Item"
button. Please feel free to call the circulation desk with any questions at (541) 463-5273.

How are books arranged in the Library?
The books in Lane Community College Library are arranged by Library of Congress Call Numbers. This system separates all knowledge into 21 classes. It can be helpful to learn the call numbers used for your area of study and then physically or virtually browse the library shelves. You can find posters of the Library of Congress Call Numbers throughout the library or online.

What is Millennium, OPAC, WebOPAC, Connexion and TeraTerm?
These are tools of the Library system:
- Millennium is the library system software. There are various modules to Millennium. To check out/in materials, you use the circulation module.
- OPAC is the acronym for Online Public Access Catalog - basically it is the library catalog. The first generation online catalogs were character based running on a terminal and were refered to as OPACs
- WebOPAC - most OPACs are now web based and are refered to as WebOPACs or online catalog or just catalog
- Connexion
s - it is the software that the Library catalogers use - Gail, Denise, Terria
- TeraTerm - this is telneting software that we have installed on our staff computers. We telnet to the library system when a fuction is not available in Millennium or when a staff member prefer to telnet rather than use Millennium
